Choosing a Power Vent Water Heater

Smiling technician servicing an hot-water heater

Before I get into the power vent water heater reviews, there are a few things you need to know about them. First, when it comes to water heater vents, there are three types to choose from — direct, atmospheric, and power vent water heaters. Let’s take a quick look at what the biggest differences between these three types are.

Power Vent Heaters

A power vented water heater uses a fan or a blower to exhaust gas. The fan or blower is installed on top of the heater and it can have a horizontal or vertical duct. In order to supply power to the fan, you need to have an electric outlet near the heater. If you go for the power vented heater, you don’t need to have a chimney or worry about backdraft.

Direct Vent Heaters

You’ll typically find direct vent water heaters in older homes. Unlike power vent heaters, you won’t need an additional electric outlet to power the heater. Direct water heaters burn fuel and the combustion from the process is what heats your water.

Then, the exhaust gasses are vented through a chimney or pipe out of your home. While it could be cheaper to run a direct vent heater compared to a power vent one, you do need to have a chimney or large exhaust pipes.

Atmospheric Vent Heaters

Atmospheric or standard heaters are the most common types because of how cheap they are to install. The vent from the heater is usually connected with the common vent and the exhaust from the heater travels through the vent and into the outdoor air.

While atmospheric vent heaters might have the easiest installation process, they also have a lot of issues with back-drafting. The exhaust from the heater might not be going outside but into your home.

When to Replace Your Old Water Heater

If you’re on the fence about replacing your old water heater, there are a couple of telltale signs you should replace it as soon as possible.

First, you should replace it once your warranty has expired because you won’t be able to get any new replacement parts from the manufacturer for free.

Also, if you notice your water heater has started leaking, cut off the water supply and call a contractor immediately. A leaky water heater can cause structural damage to your home, so it’s key you get a new one.

Third, if you notice that you run out of hot water every time you take a shower, it’s time to chooset the best tankless electric water heater. Not only is running out of water frustrating, but it’s also a sign that something in the heater has stopped working.

How to Install a Power Vent Water Heater

If you’re handy with tools and like doing DIY projects around your house, you should consider installing the power vent water heater yourself. Before I get into the power vent water heater reviews, I’m first going to show how to do it.

Things to Consider Before Installing a Power Vent Heater

First, you need to consider noise levels. Power vent water heaters tend to be a bit noisier compared to direct vent heaters, so you need to think carefully about the venting.

Still, since it doesn’t need to be connected to a chimney, it’ll be easy to figure out the water connection location. Also, make sure it’s close to a power source because the fan needs to be plugged in. Finally, pay close attention to the water connection size because not all heaters will fit your needs.

Installing the Power Vent Water Heater

The tools you will need for the installation are:

  • Level
  • Wire stripper/cutter
  • Tube cutter
  • 4-in-1 screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pipe wrench
  • Hole saw kit
  • Corded drill
  • Caulk gun
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Miter saw
  • Non-contact voltage tester

Now, the most important thing when installing a power vent is to follow the instruction manual to the letter. Since no two heaters are alike, you need to be extremely careful during the installation process.

There are plenty of articles and YouTube tutorials you can follow online to see how it’s done. However, if you feel like installing a new heater is too difficult for you, make sure to call a licensed contractor to do the job.[/wpsm_titlebox][wpsm_titlebox title=”” style=”3″]

4. Eccotemp FVI12-NG

Eccotemp FVI12-NG

Next, we have another heater from Eccotemp, which is a gas-powered tankless water heater. I wanted to include it in my review because it works great for both indoor and outdoor use.

The FVI12-NG is pretty similar compared to the FVI12-LP model. It is a manual water heater and it uses gas-fired flames to instantly heat your water. Since it’s a manual heater, you have to adjust the water temperature by turning the knobs for gas pressure and water flow.

Also, the heater comes with a stainless steel horizontal vent kit, which means it’s ready to install right out of the box. The FVI12-NG could work great in any climate or state. It comes with a two-year limited warranty, however, some exclusions do apply.

5. Eccotemp i12-NG

Eccotemp i12-NG

The final model I’m going to talk about in my power vent water heater reviews is another one from Eccotemp. The i12 is a bit different compared to the previous models I’ve mentioned, and I’m about to show you why.

First, the i12 power vent unit has a new, modern design with front paneling and black tempered glass. Also, it has automatic temperature controls and an LED temperature display. The display is a touchscreen and it shows the GPH flow, as well as the output temperature.

What’s more, the Eccotemp i12 is an indoor model, which could work great for small to medium hot water production. Of course, just like the previous models, it has a stainless steel vent kit, making it easy to install.

The heater comes with a two-year limited tank warranty and child-locking technology. One thing to note about the i12 is that it takes a bit longer to get the hot water running. Also, keep in mind that it doesn’t work for recirculating or floor heating.
